AAASS Statement on Sexual Harassment

The Board of Directors of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies condemns sexual harassment as defined by the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission of the United States government includes "Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature... when 1) submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of employment; 2) submission to, or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting such an individual; or 3) such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual's work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment."

The Board of Directors of the AAASS believes that complaints of sexual harassment need to be taken seriously and investigated promptly by the institutions and agencies to which they are submitted. If sexual harassment is judged to have occurred, the harassers should be subject to disciplinary measures, including in particularly serious cases termination of employment.
